The entire hull of the ship was made of iron. The armor covered not only the sides, but also the deck. On March 9, 1862, Monitor met for the first time in battle with the Southern battleship Virginia. During a fierce three-hour battle, both battleships were unable to inflict fatal damage on each other. On December 29, 1862, the Monitor was towed after repairs and was caught in a storm that sank 16 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras in North Carolina. Along with the ship, 4 officers and 12 sailors were killed.
